Introduction

The library collection is organised into discrete sections.

Collections Available on the Library Floor

 

General Collection

This collection houses most of the library's lending stock and is available to all registered borrowers.
The collection's strengths are in the areas of business studies, engineering and science.
The collection is located on the ground floor of the library, and is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The sequence begins in front of the library desk and runs to opposite the external windows, then continues on across towards the glassed silent study area at the back of the library.
Undergraduates can borrow 10 books for 3 weeks with 3 renewals.
Books may be recalled if there is a high demand from other students.

 

Journal & Newspaper Collection

The library at Institute of Technology Tallaght has a collection of more than 50 current print journals and also provides access to over 100,000 electronic journals or e-journals as they are sometimes called.

Currently subscribed journals are held in the journals display area to the left of the library under the window and are arranged by subject. Students can not borrow journals.

Older issues not available in the display area are held in the Archive room. These may be consulted by filling out a journal retrieval form online, or at the library desk.
You may wish to check if the issue is available electronically before filling out a retrieval form.

Newspapers - The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, The Financial Times, The Sunday Business Post, FT Weekend and Tallaght Echo newspapers are available at the news stand in the library beside the Reference section.

  • Back issues of The Irish Independent and the Financial Times are kept for four weeks.
  • Back issues of The Irish Times are kept for two weeks.
  • The Financial Times, The Sunday Business Post and FT Weekend are only available during term time.
  • All back issues can to be found under the shelf flaps adjacent to the Reference section
  • The Irish Times Online current issues can be accessed online.
  • The Irish Times Archive contains Digital and Text Archives. Digital archive contains exact reproductions of all articles published by the Irish Times from 1859 onwards, while the Text archive contains material published on ireland.com from 1996 onwards.

 

Reference Collection

The reference collection contains reference materials for the use of all registered library users. These materials are not borrowable and can only be used in the library.
The collection is located on the ground floor of the library on the right hand side of the stairway, and is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

 

Short Loan Collection

The short loan collection contains materials that are in high demand during the year. Academic staff request that materials be placed in the short loan collection to guarantee their availability.
The short loan collection is located adjacent to the library desk.
These materials are generally available for 3 days to registered library borrowers.

 

Multi-Media Collection / DVDs (was Audio and Visual Media Collection)

The library's collection of DVD and Multi-Media learning packs are housed together.
DVD materials can be borrowed for 3 days, all other materials can be borrowed for two weeks.
The collection is located on the ground floor of the library to the right of the stairway and adjacent to the library desk and the reference collection. It is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The sequence begins near the library desk.

 

Official Publications

The library holds a selection of publications from the government, government agencies and the European Union.
The collection is housed to the left hand side of the glassed silent study area at the back of the ground floor, and is borrowable by registered library borrowers. The section is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

NOTE: This collection is currently being amalgamated into the general collection.

 

Thesis and Student Projects

Student thesis and projects submitted to the library by the academic departments are available for consultation.
The collection is housed on the ground floor of the library within the glassed silent study area at the back of the ground floor. The section is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Please note these materials are strictly for reference only and should not be copied without prior permission.

 

Quinn Collection

The Quinn Collection consists of nearly one thousand books mainly of French Literature that was kindly donated by Dr. Tom Quinn. The collection is housed on the ground floor of the library within the glassed silent study area at the back of the ground floor

 

Careers Information

Career development information is deposited in the library by the Careers Officer.
This material is located in the group study area upstairs

 

General Resources - Openly Available

The library maintains a page of links to generally accessible resources, which provide access to reliable electronic information. Links on this page are of an academic nature and are related to the subject areas taught at ITT Dublin. These resources are freely available to all.

 

Donations

The library welcomes donations of recent materials relevant to the subject areas taught at ITT Dublin. Fiction books are also welcome. Please note that the library reserves the right not to add materials donated if they are not appropriate.

 

Collections Available Upstairs

 

Fáilte Ireland Collection

The Fáilte Ireland Collection was kindly donated by Fáilte Ireland. The collection is located upstairs towards the back of the mezzanine. The section is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

 

Fiction

The library holds a small fiction collection. This collection is located on the mezzanine upstairs, and is organised alphabetically by author. These materials are borrowable.

 

Video Collection

The video collection is located upstairs at the back of the mezzanine. The section is organised using the Dewey Decimal Classification system.

 

Collections in Storage

 

Journal Store

Previous years of Journal titles are mainly stored off site. These older issues not available in the display area are held in the Archive room. These may be consulted by filling out a journal retrieval form online, or at the library desk. The journal you requested will be available for you to collect from the library desk the next working day.
Please check journal area before requesting from archive room. You are also advised to check if the issue is available electronically before filling out a retrieval form.

Electronic Collections

 

Electronic Subscriptions - available on and of campus via the library website

The library's electronic collections are available via the library web site, both on and off campus.

 

Exam Papers Online

Exam papers since 2001 have been converted to electronic format by library staff and made available to registered library uses for both on and off campus use. The papers are searchable via the library catalogue and are organized by the title of the course of study to which they apply. You must log on as a registered library user to access these papers. Other Electronic Resources

The library provides access to other electronic resources by various methods. Some databases are searchable simultaneously via the broadcast search facility. You must log on as a registered library user to access these resources.
